davidhewson > Typical houses in the Venetian ghetto. In The Cemetery of Secrets Rebecca Levi lives in a house such as this. These were some of the earliest apartment blocks in the world. Families built extra storeys because the amount of island space allotted to Jewish communities was limited. As well as family homes these buildings also included workshops, offices and synagogues.
